But things have changed, and the use of Pidgin has dramatically declined over the last decade. Now, even Ubuntu Linux-based Xubuntu is ditching it as a default app.
But don’t worry, Pidgin is still being actively developed and can still be installed on Xubuntu 21.10. However, its removal as a default app marks the end of an era for multi-chat apps and a shift towards proprietary and locked down protocols.

In their blog post about the upcoming Xubuntu 21.10, the developers explained their decision to remove Pidgin as a default app: “As chat services have moved to proprietary and locked down protocols, Pidgin has become less and less useful, leading to its removal in Xubuntu.” While it can still be installed through GNOME Software, it’s clear that Pidgin’s usefulness and relevance is fading fast.
